There is something familiar about picking up a Southgator at your neighborhood community center. Maybe it happens after a class, while your child is playing in the park, or during a quick stop that turns into a longer conversation with someone you know. Maybe it comes home with you, gets set on the kitchen table, and before long the pages are folded, events are circled, and summer starts to take shape.
That moment is here again!
This year’s Summer Southgator is now available at Southgate Recreation & Park District community centers! This season’s issue carries the District’s theme, 70 Years in Motion. More than a headline for summer, it’s how we’re celebrating our 70 year anniversary. It reflects what Southgate Recreation & Park District has looked like across generations: parks filled with families, programs that become traditions, and community spaces that keep welcoming people in year after year.
Inside this issue, residents will find a summer that feels alive with movement and meaning. There is the return of the R.E.C. Van, bringing play and connection into neighborhoods across the District. There are aquatics programs that help children build confidence and water safety skills, along with family favorites like Float-In Movie Nights, Movies in the Park, and recreation swim, along with community celebrations like Filipino Fiesta, Strawberry Festiva, and National Night Out, where neighbors come together in ways that make South Sacramento feel even more like home!
The Summer Southgator also includes youth, adult, and senior programming, District project updates, and what is ahead this season at WildHawk Golf Club.
As the District approaches its 70th anniversary on August 27, this issue feels like more than a seasonal guide. It reminds us that Southgate’s story is still being written in real time by the people who show up, participate, and make these spaces matter.

You can also learn more about the award winning WildHawk Golf Club and explore the District’s pools and aquatics information. The Sac Bee’s 2025 Sacramento Favorites awarded WildHawk Golf Club as Best Golf Course and Christine Thompson Aquatic Center as Best Aquatics Facility/Waterpark. Both facilities were nominated in July 2025 with over 275,000 Sacramento residents voting between July 28–August 15.
