Journey of Hope Cyclists Ride into Sacramento for a Celebration of Inclusion and Community

Jun 5, 2025 | Announcements

This June, a remarkable group of young men will pedal their way into Sacramento, not just as cyclists—but as advocates for a more inclusive world. On Sunday, June 9, the Journey of Hope North Route team, made up of members from Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, will be welcomed at a community event hosted at the Meristem campus located at 9200 Fair Oaks Blvd. to celebrate connection, inclusion, and ability in support of individuals with disabilities.

Journey of Hope is a cross-country cycling event led by members of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity in support of The Ability Experience, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. Each summer, teams of cyclists ride thousands of miles from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. averaging 75 miles per day—a journey that spans nearly 4,000 miles—not only raising awareness but also building lasting relationships along the way. Each rider commits to raising at least $6,500, with the collective goal of reaching $500,000 to benefit programs that enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Along the way, they stop in cities and towns to meet with local organizations, host events, and build lasting connections with the disability community.

The Sacramento stop, co-hosted by UCP of Sacramento and Meristem, will include rider presentations, a chance to meet local Supervisor Rich Desmond, and even an opportunity to test ride adaptive bikes from McIlwain Mobility Solutions. Food and drinks will be provided, and the event is open to all who want to learn more and celebrate the spirit of community.

At Southgate Recreation & Park District, we’re proud to highlight events like this that bring people together through shared values. Whether it’s through recreation, education, or moments like this one, we believe that creating welcoming spaces for everyone benefits the entire community.
